EV Guide - Part Two Pokecentral 101 : A Pokemon Trainer School

EV Guide written by SuperFlanker and Jonaz

How to gain EV’s effectively.

As mentioned previously, you obtain EV’s every time you faint a Pokémon in the wild, or a trainers Pokémon, excluding Wi-Fi, the battle frontier/tower, and normal Wireless battles.

Every Pokémon will give at least one EV, some give more than one for a particular stat. Others even give EV’s in multiple stats. I have found that it’s easiest to work with Pokémon that only give one EV in one stat as 1 is an easy number to work with, all the math comes out clean.

So, you gain EV’s by fainting an opposing Pokémon, but if you stick to what I said and only kill Pokémon that give one EV in one stat, that means you will have to faint 252 of a particular Pokémon to gain 63 stat points, right? Wrong. There are plenty of items and a few other game mechanics that can speed up the EV training process for you.

Items 1: Vitamins

The first set of items that can help you speed up the EV training process are commonly referred to as Vitamins. There are a total of 6 Vitamins, each one corresponds to a particular stat and gives a total of 10 EV’s upon use. Don’t get carried away though, you can only use a Vitamin 10 times for a total of 100 EV’s per stat, and keep in mind the limit of 510 EV’s as well. Vitamins also only work for the first 100 EV's, so if you began EV training before the you add Vitamins, you won't be able to get the full effect out of them, and if you already have 100 EV's in the stat you want to use the Vitamin on, they won't work.

Picture Item Description
HP-UP HP-Up 10 HP EV’s per use.
Carbos Carbos 10 Speed EV’s per use.
Protein Protein 10 Attack EV’s per use.
Calcium Calcium 10 Special Attack EV’s per use.
Iron Iron 10 Defense EV’s per use.
Zinc Zinc 10 Special Defense EV’s per use.

All six of these Vitamins can be purchased on the second floor of the mart in Veilstone; here are some images of this.

Items 2: Hold Items

As for EV enhancing hold items, there’s the third generation Macho Brace and in the fourth generation, 6 new items were added: the Power items. Each power item gives you 4 EV’s on a specific stat, regardless to what wild/trainer Pokémon you’re facing and what EV’s they give. This means that if you fight a Starly who normally gives 1 Speed EV while holding the Power Weight, which supplies 4 HP EV's, when you faint Starly you will get 4 HP EV's and 1 Speed EV. Each of these 7 items reduces speed while you're wearing it, but once it is removed your speed is returned to normal; this does not effect speed EV's in anyway.

Macho Brace Macho Brace doubles all EV’s received.

The Macho Brace can be found in Pastoria City in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, though the way you obtain it is different between Diamond/Pearl and Platinum. On Diamond/Pearl, you must have all three types of Burmy and speak to a man, he will then give it to you if you have them in your party; as for Platinum, you must show a male and female Combee instead. Here's a picture guide for the location of his house:

Here is a chart for the names, pictures, and effect of each individual power item:

Power Weight Power Weight 4 HP EV’s.
Power Bracer Power Bracer 4 Attack EV’s.
Power Belt Power Belt 4 Attack EV’s.
Power Lens Power Lens 4 Special Attack EV’s.
Power Band Power Band 4 Special Defense EV’s.
Power Anklet Power Anklet 4 Speed EV’s.

All six of the Power Items can be bought using battle points from the Battle Tower (D/P) or the Battle Zone (Plat) for 16 battle points each; here are some screen shots to show you exactly where to get these items. Keep in mind the pictures are from D/P, not the Plat Battle Zone, you can still buy them at the Battle Zone though.

Pokérus:

Pokérus is a “disease” that you can obtain from a wild Pokémon that will double the amount of EV’s you obtain each battle. Pokérus is permanent once obtained, so don’t worry about losing it, though it is quite hard to get and there’s no real strategy to getting Pokérus, you just have to battle wild Pokémon and hope for the best.

The first time one of your Pokemon obtains Pokerus when you go to heal at the Pokecenter, Nurse Joy will point out that they have Pokerus, and will explain that it enhances the growth of your Pokemon. Keep in mind this only happens the first time Pokerus is obtained.

Alternatively, if you check on the Pokémon status screen it’ll either be indicated with a purple rectangle that says PKRS or a smiley face in the lower right hand corner. Believe it or not, there is a significant difference between the two.

If the Pokémon has the purple PKRS sign, that means Pokérus is contagious and it can be passed to other Pokémon, but this will switch to the smiley face within 24 hours of obtaining, unless you put the Pokémon in the PC, this will allow it to stay contagious forever. If the Pokémon is contagious, this means you can pass Pokérus along to different party members. All you have to do is battle with the Pokémon that has Pokérus in your party and it should slowly pass the disease to every party member. Here is a screen shot of it, I have circled the purple PKRS bar to show you.

contagious Pokerus

If the Pokémon has the tiny smiley face, this means Pokérus cannot be passed along and is only useful to the one Pokémon who has it. Here is a screen shot of the smiley face, I have circled it so you can find it easier.

Pokerus non-contagious

Here is an example of Pokérus(it works in the same fashion as the Macho Brace does without halving the speed): So say you’re battling a Shellos and you’re holding a Power Weight. You’ll receive 5 HP EV’s; with Pokérus, you’ll obtain 10 HP EV’s.
